My mother Noeline Fernando, renowned artist and teacher was born on Christmas day. She passed away 9 months ago, but the memory of her is a profound legacy in that she felt strongly for and touched many people in our community here in Kalpitiy/at KSL, which had a special place in her heart.

Usually in December she would check on everyone and see to it that those who needed it most, were taken care of -be it as a simple gift of much needed school books, free art classes for the children or in rallying up the tribe to help someone out for complex needs. In her death, I see resurrection and purpose. I am thankful for the integrity and strength she gave me, in knowing the power of caring for people around her. we will all miss her terribly this year and more in years to come.

In tribute/memory of my mother Noeline Fernando, artist, teacher, friend and more over - champion of uplifting more families and children than my sister and I, I would like to call on my network to help me do something meaningful; to give back to help the many who are in need - just like she did.

We will ensure that the funding goes towards a project to support families in the community by building a home for one of our employees. The project will cost LKR 2 million to build a 750 sqft home for a family of 5. They lost theirs owing to COVID along with sole bread winner’s job and source of income and there is no other funding in sight. The unit will comprise 3 rooms, kitchen and an outdoor toilet. All funds raised will be shared along with a list of expenses to ensure transparency and goodwill.

An original work of art by my mother will be presented to the highest contributor in memory of her and a copy will be placed in the home of the family once it is constructed.

Please help us share the love with this family and help keep Noeline- my mothers spirit - alive through your goodwill and faith in making a change, no matter how small.

With a strong conviction to pursue my calling, I left behind a career of over 10 years of experience in the Corporate Sector, I ventured on to live my dream of being a kite surfer with the conviction that my sport and passion would be a catalyst for change for the village of Kalpitiya. Together with my French Business Partner we started Kitesurfing Lanka in 2011 and later on Vayu, Mannar in 2017. Fast forward to today, Kalpitiya and Mananr are known as top destinations for the sport of Kitesurfing.

My previous fundraiser during the COVID lock down on GoFundMe collected Euro 27,000 which I dispersed to pay our staff salaries. With us now divesting our shares in our business in the North of Sri Lanka we now will use this money to keep sustaining our staff. However with no tourism expected, I cannot use this money for any other projects expect for what we have raised fund for – salaries for staff, hence this 2nd fund raiser for the house to be built.

I am Dilsiri Welikala, Co-Founder of Kitesurfing Lanka and Vayu Mannar. I am passionate about using Tourism as a transformative tool in terms of community upliftment and transformation. As a testament to the past 10 years of my working in the tourism industry, I together with my team at Kitesurfing Lanka have been able to put Kalpitiya on the map, as one of the best destinations and locations for Kitesurfing.

Our efforts have been recognized globally and we have been featured on French TV as well as mentioned in the Guardian as noteworthy sustainable tourism models.

I feel that our life on this earth is limited and we should use the tools, networks and gifts that we have to be a blessing to others.

As COVID tears down the travel and tourism industry, I feel a compelling urgency to act now to do something meaningful! And with all my skills strengths, learnings and blessings – this is how I would like to do just that – do something meaningful - now!
