“Help Them to Work Again”

The incidence of disability is influenced by a variety of factors. War, accidents, particularly road accidents, and the negative impacts of illness are among them. In addition, some people are born with disabilities and some people become disabled due to drugs. Vehicle accidents and diabetes are the leading causes of amputation in recent years. Road accidents are rising due to people's activity and carelessness, while diabetes is rising due to dietary mistakes. According to the statistics, diabetes-related complications account for 50% of all amputations in hospitals. Disability, particularly limb disabilities, significantly affects individuals' daily routines as they experience mobility issues. These people often rely on others, causing emotional, physical, and financial difficulties. Their disability prevents them from sustaining their livelihood, causing financial difficulties and hindering their ability to maintain a positive lifestyle. This results in a mentally challenging situation. However, there is a way to overcome this difficulty: a prosthetic leg .A prosthetic leg allows individuals with disabilities to perform daily tasks without assistance, enabling them to continue working and earning income. But there is an obstacle. Due to financial restrictions, the majority of people cannot afford an artificial limb from a private institute, as it costs around Rs.300, 000.00.

To address this issue, we started a project aimed at those who have walking disabilities due to leg loss but cannot afford an artificial limb. The project's goal is to provide a prosthetic limb to 50 leg amputees in Sri Lanka. As a result, they will be able to continue their daily tasks more efficiently than before, and they will advance toward financial stability.

Since 1971, Centre for Handicapped, Kundasale (CFH) has been involved in the rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities. Through donations, CFH provides a broad range of prosthetic limbs, orthotic devices, and other mobility aids to marginalized individuals with disabilities, allowing them to reintegrate into society in a meaningful way. CFH supplies these prosthetic limbs and devices to all patients regardless of gender, race, religion, ethnicity, or cast. CFH produces around 1800 prosthetic limbs and orthopedic devices each year, but has the capacity to produce much more if the required expenses for inputs are fulfilled. Centre for Handicapped has a fully dedicated rehabilitation staff to support persons with mobility issues and is ISO 9001:2015 quality Management System certified.

By expanding its scope, Centre for Handicapped enters into new areas. As a result of this crucial moment, the organization has begun vocational training for women with the help of the Kandy Zonta Club. Many programs are offered in several categories, such as beauty culture, sewing, cooking, and English language, etc. Furthermore, CFH also offers micro loans to underprivileged disabled people who want to establish their own businesses. CFH provided 40 micro loans to differently abled people around the island as part this effort. We economically empowered farmers with disabilities by giving them with agricultural equipment to continue farming. So far, we have helped a great number of farmers overcome equipment shortages. We are also executing projects to provide safe drinking water to rural communities impacted by chronic kidney disease. We provide rainwater harvesting systems and water filters to individuals through these projects, as well as undertaking a public awareness campaign about safe drinking water. In addition, we provide scholarships for bright students from households with a low income. We donate funding to students through this initiative with the support of donors. We also supply spectacles and cataract surgery to people who cannot afford to pay money with the help of donor contributions.

The Centre is managed by a Board of Directors made up of 12 volunteer board members. They are absorbed from positions of leadership in business, professions, and vocations. The Board meets officially once a month, but there is regular engagement by e-mail and phone on other significant matters as needed.

Overall supervision, monitoring, infrastructure and logistical support, finance and fund raising, data base updating and information management and all other related administrative work is done by the administration department of CFH.
