As Sri Lanka faces a treacherous economic crisis, every sector in the country has been badly affected, including hospitals. This situation has created a humanitarian crisis in the country, with children being one of the worst affected groups. Sirimavo Bandaranayke Specialised Children's Hospital (located in Peradeniya, Kandy) is one of Sri Lanka’s only 2 specialized children’s hospitals and provides care to children from various districts in seven of the nine provinces in the country.

However, a shortage of medical products has adversely impacted many children, particularly those from marginalized and poverty stricken backgrounds. One Child, under its Sustainability Branch, understands the importance of having access to prompt and proper medical services to the development of children. As such, we have decided to collaborate with the SBSCH to provide the urgent medical consumables to the paediatric eye surgery unit.

On request of Dr. Taveesha Uduhipille, the consultant eye surgeon at the paediatric eye ward, One Child is determined to raise money to purchase the following urgent surgical essentials:

One Child Sri Lanka is a Guarantee Limited Company, audited by Ernst & Young, which was established in 2016 with the aim of uplifting children through improving access to education. We have recognised that our children are our future and education is the key to reaching Sri Lanka's true potential. We believe that the education of children is the most worthwhile investment which can be made and we have made it our mission to see an improvement in the standard of and access to education in Sri Lanka.

For several years, One Child consisted mainly of the sponsor-recipient programme, by connecting academically adept children with donor families across the country. However, as the economic situation in Sri Lanka worsened and as more families were plunged into poverty, One Child decided to expand its reach to help more people. Thus, ‘Phase 2’ was implemented at the beginning of 2022, which introduced the Sustainability Branch and Upliftment Branch, both of which aim to alleviate poverty and empower children through education.

In particular, the Sustainability Branch of One Child is at the forefront of our organisation’s goal to help the worst of the affected children and their families. We know that education is what is necessary to reach Sri Lanka's true potential but how can children learn and develop the skills they need if they do not have the basic requirements for survival? This branch of One Child attempts to help sustain communities by ensuring they have the basic requirements for survival to create more opportunities for conducive learning.
